Mingo Extended Learning Center provides Adult Technical Education for residents of Mingo County and the neighboring counties. We, currently offer License Practical Nursing (LPN), Medical Office, Phlebotomy, and EKG. We are a HSEA (previously GED or TASC) testing site and HSEA tests are scheduled monthly. The Mingo County Schools Alternative Education program is also located in our facility. CPR and First Aid training are taught as a part of our full-time programs. Free hearing screenings are provided for Mingo County students by Mountain State ESC's audiology coordinator.
The Mission of Mingo Extended Learning Center is to equip students with 21st century workplace skills. Our goals include preparing our students for meeting state and federal standards on Global 21 skills performance assessment which includes a portfolio and clinical experience as well as gaining credentialing with licensure and/or certifications. The assessments are given near the end of the completion of the program concentrations. All our adult programs include clinical experiences. These are real work place experiences which provide opportunities for our students to gain employment immediately after the completion of their program concentration. We are very thankful to our advisory council members for their help and participation in the use of their health occupational facilities and businesses so that our students can learn and prepare for work and/or college. After our students complete their program concentrations many choose to continue their education and attend college. They are able to take EDGE credit with them. The EDGE credit saves them money for course work they completed here, so that they don’t have to repeat the course(s) in college.
All MELC students participate in student organizations. Our LPN and CNA students are members of Health Occupation of America (HOSA) and our business students are members of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL). The student organizations prepare our students for leadership roles and give them an opportunity to compete at the state and national competitions.
Our business programs have been here since the facility was constructed in 1969. Our LPN program has been here 25 years. We are hoping to add Medical Assisting and Diesel Technology programs soon.
Mingo Extended Learning Center School of Practical Nursing is operated by Mingo County Board of Education as an adult preparatory program sponsored by the Bureau of Vocational Technical and Adult Education.
The program is fully accredited by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Practical Nurses. One class will be admitted annually beginning in July.
Application deadline for each class beginning in July will be April 1st of each year. Our testing usually begins in December, and the TABE (taken at the ABE class at SWVCTC in Williamson) needs to be completed before you can take your entrance exam. If you are weak in any areas of the TABE, please work with the ABE teacher to improve your skills. Each student is only permitted to take the Arnett (entrance) test three times in a single academic year. Please prepare for the exam. Each year approximately 25 students are selected to begin an intensive twelve month program to prepare for a career as a practical nurse.
