  • Hatfields & McCoys Historical Society Essay Competition

College-bound high school seniors in Eastern Kentucky and Southern West Virginia are invited to submit an essay to the Hatfields And McCoys Historical Society Essay Competition. A successful student will receive a $1,000 scholarship award.

“College is a significant burden to students, especially first-time college students,” said William K. Hatfield, president of the organization. “We help by providing financial assistance through our essay competition.”

    To be eligible:

    - Students must be residents of Logan or Mingo counties in West Virginia; or Pike County Kentucky.

    - Be on track to complete high school in the current academic year

    - Be on track to attend an accredited university, community college or technical school in the fall

    - Hold a 2.5 GPA or higher in high school

Participants must submit an original 1,000-word essay on one of two subjects:

    1. The impact of the Hatfield-McCoy feud on Appalachian culture

    2. The impact of the Hatfield-McCoy feud on the essayist’s family

Submit essays by email to William K. Hatfield, president, (williamkhatfield@gmail.com) no later than May 14, 2025. The successful entry will be announced after judging by the group’s board.

    About The Feud

The Hatfield-McCoy feud began in the Tug River valley’s remote crags, the river separating West Virginia and Kentucky. The river also separated the loyalties of two divided families.

The Hatfields and McCoys are famous for their legendary, decades-long feud in the Appalachian region that became a symbol of violence, family loyalty, and retribution. It is part American folklore.

William Anderson Hatfield, known as “Devil Anse,” was the recognized leader of the Hatfields. Randolph “Old Randle” McCoy was the leader of the McCoys.
